Thanks for leaving me the info about the flat braid join and not making loops on all squares. I am using a lacy join pattern found here: http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/joining_squares4.htm
It doesn't require you to go all the way around every square either, but I'm doing it anyway and just using the loops on the outside for part of my border.
